![]() ![]() A shorter focal length will ensure that you can fit your target completely into your field of view. Why? First, the focal length of your telescope determines the width of your field of view. Wider and Faster is BetterĬommon advice for beginners in astrophotography is to look for a shorter focal length telescope (which gives you a wider field of view) and a “fast” focal ratio (which increases image brightness for a given exposure time). On the other hand, even the best telescope will produce subpar images with an unsuitable mount for tracking. A great astrophotography mount, combined with an average DSLR camera (even without a telescope), can take fantastic images of the Milky Way and even deep sky objects. In fact, many would say that choosing the right mount for astrophotography is more important than choosing the right telescope. If you’re planning to take long-exposure images, you’ll need a mount designed to automatically track your target across the sky. The best images of distant objects can require hours of total exposure (taken in a series of “stacked” images). The most basic decision you’ll make is whether you’ll be taking long-exposure photographs. Whether you’re a general photographer looking to branch out into astrophotography, or whether you’re an astronomy enthusiast looking to learn how to take stunning photographs of the sights you already know and love – astrophotography is an art form unto itself, and it takes some time and experience, plus the right equipment. It can be an incredibly rewarding experience to capture breathtaking images of our universe far beyond what’s possible with a camera alone. I do not wish to retain the signifier woman in order to vindicate the genre because these films include Barbara Steele as at least a strong heroine in a stereotypically male genre. Hichcock, 1962) and Corman’s sharp angles and lurid colour ( The Pit and the Pendulum, 1961). ![]() Barbara Steele is less important than, for example a) the things that seem to continually happen around her (gothic landscapes, baroque tales of sexual depravity and death) or b) the ways in which she is filmed, such as Bava’s chiaroscuro and misty close-ups, Freda’s framing of the terrorised face ( L’Orribile Segreto dei Dr Hichcock/ The Terrible Secret of Dr. The third problem is that, as a woman who herself is, among many, enthralled by Steele’s face, I do not visually relate to the signifier Barbara Steele per se, so much as to the particular quality and intensity with which her image, like many other images, whether of bodies, landscapes or even sound-images, affects me as viewer. The second problem is the need for any form of delirious cinematic pleasure – cinesexuality – to be transcribed into an established sexual neurosis at all. The first is the way in which bodies in cinema, and specifically women’s faces, have been subsumed by their capacity to signify, not ‘real’ women per se, but a palpable incarnation of male fantasy, specifically male fetishism. (1) Hardy’s devotional statement resonates with three major problems that persistently haunt women in film. Barbara Steele’s image, particularly as the reanimated Asa, replete with holes in her face from the hammering of a spiked mask into the witch, is, in the words of Phil Hardy “more than any other, the emblem and fetish of the genre”. One image haunts the history of Italian horror cinema more than any other – the face of Barbara Steele in La Maschera del Demonio. This desire for the strange, impossible and corporeal within the texture of celluloid I have termed cinesexuality – sexuality of and for the cinema. I will not be discussing what happens in Steele’s films but how her image affects her fans. Key to my argument is thinking desire for cinematic images independent of sexual orientation, oriented purely toward the imagetic. ![]() The film concerns the heretic witch Asa (Steele) burned at the stake and tortured with a spiked mask, before being reincarnated years later to haunt her young ancestor Katja (also Steele) whom she resembles. For example, if you prevent a random character from being arrested, their spouse or family member might remember that, and may be more willing to join the cause. Additionally, the option to choose anyone makes London feel more alive and realistic than virtually any other open world game, because each character has their own motivations and needs to fulfill. That also means that you can intentionally choose to make a mission harder by picking a someone that has to take a more direct route than a stealthier path in levels based on their skill set. ![]() The grandma that's skilled with robotics? The homeless girl packing a silenced MP5? The hypnotist street performer that can convert guards to your side for a mission? These are just some of the people you can profile and bring onto your team, rounding out your squad's needs for a particular mission. Everyone on the streets is a possible agent in training. The big twist here is that any character can join your cause and help start the revolution. The commentary about cryptocurrency, driverless cars, drones, illegal immigration and other issues feels ripped from today's headlines. Coupled with tech that tracks their every move, the conditions are ripe for revolution. Watch Dogs Legion is a dire take on a future where citizens are no longer free in their own city, because their government has sold their security and safety to a private military corporation. This hacking-focused adventure does an incredible job of giving players the flexibility of stepping into the shoes of anyone in London, but its biggest stumbling block, ironically, is tech-based. Can Dedsec cause enough mayhem to get the people behind their movement? More importantly, can they figure out who framed them and put an end to their schemes? Show more Bringing them over to you side can involve handling a task related to solving a problem in their life, making a larger disruptive impact to free segments of the city from invasive control, or (in some cases) simply walking up and asking a person that has benefited from Dedsec's previous activities if they'd like to join the cause. Instead of taking the role of a specific character, players will recruit their team from the people on the streets of London, so anyone could become vital to your mission: a former spy, the homeless, even a little old lady feeding pigeons in the park. The only possible way to fight back is to resurrect Dedsec from its ashes. Afterwards, a security company named Albion takes over London with the use of security drones, automated checkpoints, and armed guards, controlling the lives of the people under the illusion of security and justice. Unfortunately, on a mission, a separate organization known as Zero Day bombs landmarks around London and pins the blame on Dedsec, getting them branded as terrorists. Fighting back against this oppression and loss of rights is the London branch of Dedsec, a hacker collective that seeks to liberate the population from these crippling societal controls. WATCH DOGS LEGION is an open world action adventure set in a futuristic London that has undergone significant upheaval and chaos with a government that's restricted the rights of its citizens and turned over their personal information to corporations. Characters can also drink, with the screen showing the effects of the liquor in their system, and some missions feature drugs or drug-related items. Players also have meetings in their safehouse, which is set beneath a pub where characters are shown drunk or in states of inebriation. After trying a variety of song ideas with acoustic guitar and voice, I found the tempo/beat detection worked best if I kept the accompaniment part simple and accented the first beat of each bar. Music Memos will analyse the harmonic and rhythmic content of the recording and display the results on a waveform as a series of bar lines and chord markings. Once you have completed your performance, tap the circle again to stop the recording. Open Music Memos, and when you are ready to record your idea, tap the circle in the centre of the screen to begin (see Screen 1). In January 1930, Lilienfeld was issued U.S. The first patent covering what could be considered a field-effect transistor was filed in 1926 by Austro-Hungarian-American physicist Julius Edgar Lilienfeld. The transistor resulting from the Bell Labs research project would not be the world’s first transistor, however. In 1914, Johann Koenigsberger, a physics professor at Germany’s University of Freiburg, created three classifications for solid-state materials based on conductivity : metals, insulators and variable conductors. In the early 20th century, the body of knowledge surrounding solid-state physics, especially the atomic properties of solid materials, began to grow. Scientific research into the electrical resistance and conductivity properties of semiconductor material goes back as far as the early 19th century to the days of the very influential British scientist Michael Faraday. These shortcomings in conventional vacuum tubes attracted the attention of engineers at Bell Labs, which was operated by AT&T, as early as the 1930s when research director Mervin Kelly reasoned that the nascent field of semiconductors might hold the answer. Early Semiconductor Advances Pave the Way Towards the Transistor Vacuum tubes would also generate a great deal of heat which increases the risk of glass cracking and contributes to the degeneration of internal components. ![]() Vacuum tubes were constructed of glass and any cracks would disrupt the vacuum and cause the tube to stop working properly. The vacuum tube did have serious drawbacks which the transistor would improve upon, however. Audions installed in Pittsburgh, Omaha and Salt Lake City supported this first cross-country phone line by boosting the call’s electrical signal at strategic points along the way. ![]() For example, De Forest’s audions became a central component to the first cross-country telephone line constructed by AT&T which could transmit a telephone call signal up to 3,400 miles by July 1914. The ability to control and amplify an electric current using vacuum tubes made these devices an incredibly important component of electronic systems built in the early 20th century. Such amplification enabled electrical currents to be directed further along a cable without weakening. Although Fleming invented the first widely used vacuum tube, the first “audion” vacuum tube device capable of amplification was invented in 1907 by American inventor Lee De Forest, a pioneer in early radio and motion picture technologies. Invented in 1904 by British electrical engineer John Ambrose Fleming, vacuum tubes consisted of two electrodes within a glass-enclosed vacuum which enabled an electric current to flow between the two electrodes. De Forest’s Audion Enables Amplification in Vacuum Tubes, But Issues Remainedįor decades prior to the advent of the transistor, the amplification of electrical signals was achieved through the use of vacuum tubes. This April 4th marks the 67th anniversary of the issue date for one of two patents for which this trio of innovators has been inducted into the Hall of Fame, giving us a good occasion to look back at the development of this incredibly important 20th century invention. Brattain are the trio credited with developing the first commercially successful transistor product in the 1940s at the widely heralded American research and development facility Bell Labs. In 1974, a trio of engineering luminaries were inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for their seminal contributions to the creation of the transistor. (L to R) John Bardeen, William Shockley and Walter Brattain. In 2011, state-of-the-art processing units contained as many as 2.9 billion transistors on a single chip. The invention of the transistor has been hailed as a milestone achievement by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Yesterday’s transistors have largely been replaced by today’s integrated circuits, which are capable of much more complex processing of electrical signals, but the discovery of the transistor was a huge turning point in the electronics industry of the mid-20th century. It’s no understatement to say that modern electronic devices couldn’t function without a component that can process electrical signals in the manner accomplished by a transistor. One of the foundational elements of all electronic devices today is the transistor, a semiconductor device including three terminals which is capable of amplifying an electric current or voltage which is applied to one of the terminals and output through another terminal. |
